mmdf and EHLO - SCO

i use a lot of vsifax at my office and a lot of our client sites. vsifax's latest release, when sending email, uses SMTP command EHLO fails on MMDF. MMDF worked find with HELO (which is what the older vsifax releases used, but they've now changed that and claim it is an industry standard), but it is not within my control which to use - its built into the vsifax binaries. i don't have a sco box with sendmail to test. i tried with exim and the EHLO sequence works fine - its just plain not implemented in sco's MMDF. ...

    Default mmdf and EHLO

i use a lot of vsifax at my office and a lot of our client sites.

vsifax's latest release, when sending email, uses SMTP command EHLO

fails on MMDF. MMDF worked find with HELO (which is what the older
vsifax releases used, but they've now changed that and claim it is
an industry standard), but it is not within my control which to
use - its built into the vsifax binaries.

i don't have a sco box with sendmail to test. i tried with exim and
the EHLO sequence works fine - its just plain not implemented in sco's
    MMDF.

    any known workarounds?

the only things i came up with are to either swap out MTA or point
to an upstream smtp server (which can get messy), neither of which
    seems great.

    thanks!

openserver 5.05/6/7 and whatever mmdf ships with it plus a security patches
on some of the older boxes.

Why doesn't VisiFax try HELO afdter EHLO fails?

I can't put my hands on an RFC statement about this, but plain commen
sense says that if EHLO fails, the caller should issue an RSET and then
    try HELO.

That's up to VisiFax. I suspect this version of software is
expecting a certain strings returned by the EHLO to see the
capabilities. I suspect that in this day and age they are looking
for the 8BITMIME string or perhaps ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES.

I would say that might be common sense only if the application
could live with what is/was supported on older MTAs.

Only VisiFax could answer this exactly, but just telnet
to a server on port 25 and issue both an EHLO and an HELO to
    see what is there.

the former - vsifax, acting as a client, talks to whatever SMTP server
you have directly and now issues a EHLO to start the conversation (whereas
older releases did a HELO), there is no fallback to HELO.

    yeah, i'm screaming about that

One or two sentences earlier, RFC2821 also requires all
contemporary SMTP servers, regardless of whether they actually support
any SMTP extensions, to support EHLO. That leaves open the door
for legacy SMTP servers not to support EHLO, but it would be kinda nice
were MMDF to have some ESMTP support. Ah well, not that I really
care; as I find obtuse smtpd's spam-fighting capabilities to be
superior to MMDF's, I always drop obtuse in front (and it doesn't
    support ESMTP, either).

Still, 2821's HELO requirement that John quoted above is really just a
statement of what is currently done by well-designed ESMTP clients - and
it's common sense. If, for instance, your requirement is to transmit
8-bit data in a mail message, ESMTP provides one way of doing it, but
it can be done using previous standards that work perfectly well over
SMTP as well, so there's no reason to require ESMTP.
