    Your email client?

A "keep connection alive" utility so you always have the same
    IP address?

A remote server volume in I-forget-the-name-but-its-there-somewhere?

Do you have your email program set to check mail every 15 minutes,
whether or not you have a network connection?

Quicken or Powerticker or something looking for stock quotes on a
    regular basis.

Any email program, though I am sure that Eudora doesn't check mail when
    it isn't running. :)

Something looking at weather or road conditions.

A Palm synchronizer perhaps, though I've never seen one do anything
automatically. Maybe the newer ones can try to check their possible
    modem connections.

Some server you used to connect to on your local network where you
checked the little box that says "connect on startup." This, however
should give you a startup error message. No, that isn't it.

As you can tell I'm shooting at phantoms here.

Got an old copy of Timbuktu on there?
