More help needed! (was "Password incorrect") - Mac Networking

Hi folks. All your suggestions when I posted this a few days ago were really useful - though sadly, none of them worked. But I was away over the Easter weekend - and though I posted a request for any more ideas, I suspect folk had killed the thread through lack of activity for 4 days... Still, as I said, nothing so far has worked - including creating totally new users on both machines. so I'd be really grateful if any of you could help me with any more ideas. Hi folks. All your suggestions when I posted this a few days ago were
really useful - though sadly, none of them worked. But I was away over
the Easter weekend - and though I posted a request for any more ideas, I
suspect folk had killed the thread through lack of activity for 4 days...

Still, as I said, nothing so far has worked - including creating totally
new users on both machines. so I'd be really grateful if any of you
could help me with any more ideas.

Rather than restate the whole problem, I'll let folks look in the other
thread for details. In a nutshell, though, I have two 'networked' macs
running OSX 10.2.8 and 10.3.3 - and they can see each other, and I can
log on to either machine as 'Guest' - but they tell me I have an invalid
password when i try to log on as a registered user - and I *don't* have
    an invalid password!

    eeek! help! going mad!

    TIA,

    Richard

    Richard-

If this were OS 9 or earlier, I would have mentioned that your machine's name
and your user name are different. That still may be related to your OS X
    problem.

For example, I have an old Mac that shows up in AppleTalk as "Fred's Performa".
The user name in the file sharing window where the password is entered, is
different, e.g. "Fred". Another machine is "Fred's G3", but it has a different
user name, e.g. "User1". I always use the same password, so that isn't a
problem. What happens is that when selecting the machine name in the chooser,
the user name of my LOCAL computer comes up in the user window for the other
machine, and I forget to change it. Even though the problem is the user name,
the error message says the password is invalid.

Another problem from the older OS, is that there is an 8 character limit for a
password, and I use a 9 character password by leaving off the last character.
Sometimes I forget and include that letter, and it doesn't work. Of course I
can just press Return again, since only the first 8 characters remain in the
    password box.

Does this have any bearing on your problem?

thanks for the suggestions Fred. The names are the same - and my
password is 7 digits. So, no dice - but thank you.
