Derek, did Tim's solution work for you? I've tried this except for the "print as screen optimized" selection. However, my files, too, are larger than before. We are very frustrated at this point because we cannot compress the files to a usable pdf size.

Try File>Save As and overwrite the original.

I have found that this works pretty well on some occasions.

Then again, "shrink file size" also works wonders sometimes.

Is there any way to control the latter so that it too knows to work at
screen resolution? Indeed, anyone know how this feature works at all?

Does it just pick up the settings from the file? Or from the Acrobat
    defaults?

Clearly file size is something that puzzles people. Well, me at least.
