Default move objects to new layer

Is there a quick way to move objects to a new layer in situ? Can make new
layer and cut and paste, but objects move. Collecting in new layer seems
make the current layer a sublayer of a new layer

to paste in the same place, Ctrl-F instead of Ctrl-V.

to drag, expand the layer palette to see the objects in a layer, click on desired object, drag to new layer.

You can also create a new layer and drag the object to the new layer in the
Layers Palette (ALT+DRAG will copy rather than move)
