movie advice - Macromedia Director Basics

I am new to using movie clips within Director and was looking for some general advice. I am creating a CD-Rom that promotes an event. Much of the content is going to be video clips/interviews from the previous year. We are working with a video company who is compiling the video to our specifications. So we have complete freedom in the amount of video, the length of each clip, the resolution of each clip, etc. Does anyone have any advice on amount of video, since I can load as I go, it shouldn't matter the total size of the CD-Rom, ...

Does anyone have any advice on amount of video, since I can load as I go, it shouldn't matter the total size of the CD-Rom, but in terms of individual movie recommendations, is it just a matter of trial and error to see what will run smoothly?

Any advice, or links to sites that have this kind of information will be hugely appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

I have had success with 320x240 15fps video on a CD ROM. I encode using Sorenson because it's fairly good quality and small size. I have used full frame (640x480) movies, but they can eat up CD space.

In my most recent project, I'm placing 320x240 30FPS movies encoded with Sorenson 3. They run well, but load slowly when they are over 30 seconds or so in length. I do not know how they will run on older machines.

Thanks a lot for your advice. The movies are going to be the central focus of the movie, so I was hoping to have them larger than 320 by 240. Also, what type of movies do you? Quicktime, mpeg?

Thanks again for your prompt reply.

I use strictly Quicktime. It's cross platform and easy to work with.

You could experiment with MPEG4 video, I have never tried that. The quality is astounding considering the file size. This would require Quicktime 6 to be installed on viewers' machines.

I have a 330 x 440 30FPS video on my CD right now. It's 2:30 in length and 120MB. It plays back OK, but it takes about 15 seconds to load. I'm thinking about putting in a "loading. . .") animation. 15 seconds is a long time!

I always include the Quicktime installers for Mac/PC on my Cd ROMs. They are small and easy to license form the Apple web site. This way, I always have the flexibility of Quicktime. I've used WMP/AVIs in the past, and they are nearly impossible to work with.
