Moving text into the next cell

Default Moving text into the next cell

I am working on a large project with a lot of tables. The raw copy/lists come from Word and are in general set up with tabs, which makes it an easy column separator. Just sometimes the copy is shifted a little bit (i. e. the header content does not line up with the body content that suppose to go underneath it. It would help to just move that header text to the next cell and reflow that whole line. In QuarkXpress it used to be the tab key, but now the tab key just navigates through the cells and all the break character don't work either.

Does anybody know how to do that, since I don't want to copy content in and out from one cell to the other. There has to be an easier way. Somehow link the cells or some special command...

I hope, you even understand my question... kind of hard to explain.

    I appreciate any help.
    Thanks in advance...

If I'm understanding you correctly, I often use my PopTabFmClip script to do this kind of thing. While it was created as a script to move content into an InDesign table from Excel, it is also quite useful for moving data from table to table inside InDesign and even from one part of a table to another.

Just select the cell (or range of cells) whose content you want moved, copy to the clipboard, then click in the top-left cell of the target and run the script.

You can find it here: PopTabFmCLip <http://www.pdsassoc.com/index.php?Nav=solnssub&Ban=PopulateTableFromClipbo ard&Info=PDSproducts/PopulateTableFromClipboard/index.php>.

    Dave,
I just have to ask: is the name short for "populate table from clipboard"?
Took me a while to reach even that answer ;)
    Thank you

    Yep, that's what it's short for -- snappy isn't it? :-)

Dave: lotta busy work, isn't it? Why isn't tabbing or some other keystroke built into the functionality of the table? I'm always getting word/excel files with too many/few tabs or spaces in lieu of spaces. It's serious drudge work to copy and paste from cell to cell and, as mentioned, you could very easily do this in Quark.

I only started working with table regularly fairly recently and manipulating text hasn't impressed me much. Part of it is learning curve. But tabbing over text should be 2nd nature.

I'm sure I'll be preaching child's play to the pros here like Richard and Dave - but for the rest of you... make sure and look at your hidden characters before creating youor tables. And if the table doesnt' look right - covert back to text and fix that way - before starting to format. Using find-change (and some quick tab stops) I can change even the longest of text within a few minutes. And have taught my users how to as well - seems to work ususally

Do I wish tables would act a little more like Excel, with copying changing and moving? Yes - but considering our first glimpse at tables in quark 5 - and where we have all come to - I'm tickled pink with a with the way things work, even if we have to use a few work arounds in Quark 7 and CS2 (By the way thanks for the script - love it!). I'm also trusting that Adobe will indeed improve it with every generation. Man I sound like all smiles and flowers here....
