Default moving to Dapper6.04 from Breeze5.10.... any opinions?

I upgraded my o.s and it seems to be more stable, the only problem is with
    firefox1.5 (i had 1.0.7), which crashes 1/3 times.
Anyway i still have the issue with 3d acceleration with my pci express ati
card (8.22.5 driver rel.). I heard that 3d support isn't available yet for
pci-ex video card but I don't know if it's true....

I have also been using Dapper for a couple of weeks. But there still is
a few minor errors needing finetuning, so I will not exactly call it
    "more stable" than Breezy.

For your firefox problems there is a peculiar solution, where you have
to install another theme. I installed the Noia 2.0 (eXtreme)
    <https://addons.mozilla.org/themes/moreinfo.php?id=72&application=firefox>
theme and my firefox 1.5.0.1 is working perfectly at the moment.

I realize Dapper has not been released yet. But ... I have spent this
entire afternoon and evening trying to get it running on a machine that
ran Breezy just fine. After finally getting it installed (first three
attempts, install just mysteriously died or failed installing packages),
it says it wants to do 234 updates. So I let it do the updates. It
downloads, installs, then tells me that quite a list had errors and will
not be updated. The last one on the list is something to do with the
Gnome desktop. (Didn't write it down.) The machine wants to restart at
this point, so I let it do so, I see the Ubuntu graphical login screen
and log in. At that point, I get a brown background with a stuck mouse,
and the machine just sits. Being a relatively new Linux user, all I
know to do at this point is to reinstall. So I did. I ran through the
update procedure, it got farther this time, but I still have quite a few
errors, the last one, of course, has to do with the graphical interface.
The machine wants to restart. But I have not done so, because I know
where it will end up (brown screen with stuck mouse). I'm hoping
someone has experienced this and knows what to do. Otherwise, I guess I
have to put Dapper away till its final release. Help please????

BTW, I have tried restarting from the Dapper CD and doing a recovery,
but it can't mount the partition. So please don't suggest that one. :-)

Sorry, I don't know how to help you.

I installed my Dapper the boring way, I simply changed my
/etc/apt/sources.list and made a 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get
-y dist-upgrade'. I had to manually uninstall a few packages, but it
worked... There has been some major changes where for instance 'hotplug'
has been replaced by a newer version of 'udev'. And there is quite a lot
of differences in the configuration of the two versions.

Oh, you have no idea just how helpful you were!! I ran those two
commands you noted above. Each installed lots of apps and exited
without complaint. I held my breath and rebooted, and voila, I have a
working system. Unfortunately I'm unable to install the nVidia graphics
driver. In Breezy, I just ran the Synaptic package manager, installed
nvidia-glx then ran the command "sudo nvidia-glx-config enable" and
restarted Gnome. I installed nvidia-glx OK, but when I enter the above
    command, I get:

    Error: /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /var/lib xfree86/xorg.conf.md5sum are
missing from your system. Please make sure your xserver package is
    installed correctly.

The first file is there and looks like it has the right stuff for my
Nvidia graphics card. However, the folder /var/lib/xfree86 is missing
    entirely. Ideas on this one?

    Thanks and Regards,

    Margaret

    Fixed it. Although there's no /var/lib/xfree86 directory, there's a
/var/lib/x11 directory that has the missing file. So I created the dir
/var/lib/xfree86, copied the files from /var/lib/x11, ran
"nvidia-glx-config enable", restarted, and now the driver's working
fine. Yippee. Looks like I have a working Dapper system now.

    Thanks so much!
