Default MS Access unicode compression

Using both CF 5 and 6 with MS Access 2002 as the database.

Trying to create and maintain tables through a ColdFusion app, and running
into problems because every text column I create has the Unicode Compression
tag set to No.

Microsoft suggest using "With compression" as part of the alter column (or
add column) statement
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnacc2k/html/a
cintsql.asp) but this doesn't work.

Any ideas how I can do this, to save having to take the database down
everytime I want to add a column?

Tim,
Not working for me I'm afraid:

Your database query:
alter table test modify column second char(50) with compression null
Failed. The SQL return codes were:
SQL State: 42000
Native Error Code: -3554

I noted you mentioned a specific driver. Could this be the issue?

Yeah, you need to use the unicode driver because it uses OLEDB.
