MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
Hi there,
we use MS SMS system to update our local network. Today, I got the new msi and
delivered to our domain admin to deploy it as we did with FP7. After deployment
of FP8, everyone started complaining about popups in IE, and it's true, even if
there is no Flash content in the webpage, we are having issues opening popups
(just don't open).
We reinstalled FP7 and now it's working again.
We tested FP7 alone, FP7 + FP8 (gargabe installation in my opinion) and it
works, FP8 alone (uninstalling any previous version of FP) keeps this issue
with popups (any kind of popups).
This Issue seems to be only with activeX version since I use Firefox and
nothing to say till now.
Is this a known issue?

same time? I know this is a very easy mistake to make with rollout
systems like MS SMS... and the default behaviour of IE these days is to
complete block popup windows. Perhaps you could have accidentally set IE
back to it's default behaviour?
I certainly haven't noticed any problems with opening popup windows in
IE (IE 6.0 on Win2K SP4) when running flash 8....
Personally I completely gave up using IE when the XP SP 2 update came
out - it make it a completely unusable browser IMHO.

First: Using IE is not my option but the company, I personally use Firefox but
common users use only IE and have no other option. Our deployment is made
through SMS Server that installs msi packages over the network.
We cannot go over 1000 machines and do a manual installation.
SMS uninstalls previous version and installs the new one. Over 50 machines
(the first targets), none was able to open Popups after the installation.
After making a rollback to 7.0.19 everything start working again, so, there is
something odd with MSI install and should be fixed. We have a Flex project
about to go on production and we need FP8 and his performance.

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
I would actually like to take a closer look at one of the effected machines.
My assumption is a pop-up blocker is culprit here that may have had a setting
changed during the SMS push. Just to know, have you tried to install the Flash
Player on one of these machines to see if it is related to the SMS or if there
is something else (Please note I am not asking you to go around to all 1000
machine and install the Player as I know this isn't efficient or reasonable!).

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
Hi there,
On my machine it worked with manual installation, even if i didn't uninstall
fp7, add & remove Programs just list FP8 installation.
On other machines what happens with manual installation:
1) the machine have FP7 installed and then install FP8 : it works fine
2) FP7 is uninstalled then FP8 installed : it doesn't work (I mean, popups
beeing opened but they freeze).
Since SMS uninstalls previous version (since FP7 was already deployed by SMS)
we get the 2) situation.
I already did the test on a bunch of workstations and it's always the same
situation.
BTW, our domain policies disable XP IE popup-blocker. I might be mistaken but
since with FP7 it works, I don't think that it's a popup-blocker issue...

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
I'm having trouble getting a good package using the MSI. Did you create a
package using a definition from the MSI? I've tried for a few days now tweaking
little things here and there in the package to the program. Sometimes SMS
reports successful and sometimes not. Either way, it does indeed fail. I have
tried the active x and the plugin msi. Both fail.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
We are still tracking this issue but is not related to SMS or Flash Player
itself it seems.
We already made some registry compare with Macromedia and there are some
diferences. It can be related to local software that can somehow play some
nasty role here.
For the package itself we had no problem creating it (with default values) and
deploy it to diferent computer collections, it always succeded but the browser
just stop showing popups.

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
Our customer is using the FP7 and now that the vuklnerability is out, we have
to go to FP8, Im having the same issues with the installation of FP8, it
installs fine, but when accessing content from our website, it does not want to
open the window to show the flash content.
When I uninstall FP8 and reinstall FP7, it all works fine.
Sounds like a bug in the FP8 or do we have to receo all of the flash content?
Any help would be appreciated, expecially from a Macromedia Support tech

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
This window that you're trying to open is a popup? Did you try a popup window
without any flash content?
Our issue is not even related to flash content, it is related to FP8 because
after upgrade no popup shows with or without flash content inside.

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
Sounds just like my problem, after installing the FP8, the window with the
flash content never opens up, however, if I remove and reinstall the FP7, the
popup window opens and it shows the flash content fine.
Also this has nothing to do with Internet Explorer settings (pop-up blockers,
firewall, etc), nothing has changed but the FP8 install.
The install source code I'm using is the one that one can get after applying
for the enterprise license, its called: install_flash_player_active_x.msi, and
it has a digital signature of: Wednesday, August 31, 2005 5:15:55 PM
Any solutions out there?

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
its the same issue that we had.
take a look here and try to apply this fix :

I hope that macromedia will launch a fix or a new msi for this.

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
Definitely a problem with the Flash 8 msi.
We distribute with Group Policy. When we remove Flash 7 and install Flash 8
using the msi, IE windows open blank. As soon as we roll back to Flash 7 IE
works correctly again. All automated and repeatable, no other changes at the
same time.
There's a bug in there somewhere. It may be connected with running the msi
through Group Policy, instead of executing it manually.

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
Look at the url on my previous post. I posted A fix that solves that problem.
We could track the issue doing some registry compares and find that this
upgrade wasn't keeping those values.
Try it and see if it solves your problem.

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
Thanks for that suggestion, I already have those exact registry keys/data, were you suggesting deleting them? or adding them if the machine did not have it?
Thanks in advance.

Re: MSI deployment of FP 8 not working properly in IE
Add them if they didn't exist.
When upgrading from FP7 (and only 7) to FP8, the uninstall-install process
somehow forgot to keep this entries.
We are slowly upgrading our machines and till now it's working as fix.
If it doesn't for you, I advise you to follow this steps.
Get a Registry compare tool.
Get a test machine (We used virtual machines, it's easier to rollback)
Install WinXP SP2 (FP6 inside)
take a snapshot of your system (? system restore snapshot ?)
Install FP7 and then FP8
Take a registry snapshot
rollback to WinXP + fp6 system snapshot
install FP8 and take a registry snapshot
with the tool compare both files. You'll be able to see what has been changed
from not working > working system.
You should avoid any other software manipulation during this process to avoid
useless keys in the compare.
Regards.
