The trouble with 72 is that after a few requotes, the lines
are re wrapped into fragments. I prefer to set the wrap at 65.

Regardless of the number, if quoted enough, it will rewrap into
    fragments.

MTNW used to be able to rewrap properly in this situation.

And it still does, but sometimes it takes a little work to
clean up a fifth- or sixth-time quoted post. Sometimes I feel a
little like that obsessive-compulsive TV detective "Monk."

When the quotes start getting out of hand, I rewrap
    _everyone's_ lines at 65.

If I recall correctly, 3.1 would take something like this:
     [/ref]
    > this [/ref][/ref]

And wrap it to something like this:
     [/ref][/ref]

It doesn't do that any more.

Thing is that if there are no blank lines between the uneven level of
quotes, it assumed that there was a line break, and fixed it.

Ahh, I see what you mean. OTOH, I would hit the delete key a
little and turn it into this:
     [/ref][/ref]

    ...or even this:
     [/ref][/ref]

I did do some looking in other groups with multi-quoted
posts, and the only time that I found this problem was where
others had their wraps set at some absurdly high level, or had
no wrapping at all -- thus my suggestion to set at 65.

In any case, there were some posts where differing quote
levels not separated by a blank line were indeed from different
posts, and should _not_ have been rewrapped together.

I find that a little time spent doing a little clean-up
helps me compose my thoughts, my spelling, and my grammar.
