If I install win98 as a second system I understand that I
have to reinstall XP. Will I lose all the updates that I

Just copy boot.ini, ntldr and ntdetect from your
XP CD's i386 folder.
then you dont hv to reinstall XP.
but the correct way is to install the latest OS later.
