Default My 1st Ubuntu encounter

Hello everyone this is my 1st post .Very bored one day I decided it was time
to take a look at Linux. I had a spare PC and found a copy of Ubuntu 5.06
on a free CD on a computer mag. I gave over a partition on my 80gb Seagate
drive and installed using defaults except I formatted with something like
3ext? All went well and I was very impressed that it found my network and
all installed hardware. I bought a new mag and upgraded to 5.10 with no
problems, I kept this for several weeks but was concrned I could not find my
2 40gb 'e' & 'f' NTFS drives. I was concerned that they were ok I decided to
install Win xp again and then to eventually persue a dual boot situation,
doing this by booting from the Win xp CD. This is where I think I went wrong
as the machine stalled for over an hour on formatting, install did not
complete and my Seagate drive is now a 'brick'. I've tried booting the drive
with the utilities from the seagate site but it stalls the machine at the
bios screen. Also connecting the drive in an externa enclosure on a Winxp
machine causes it to lock up-I think briefly a 'bubble' popped up in the
task bar saying unrecognisable file format .Question is -is the drive for
the bin or is there anything else I can try. HDDs are quite cheap now and
this has not damped my enthusiasm for wanting to have another go but I would
like to know where I went wrong at least before I try again. TIA!

Try with this http://www.fs-driver.org/ in your externa enclosure.
Or in Windows. Klik on start on run an type diskmgmt.msc

First install Windows. Then Ubuntu. Ubuntu will make the dual boot.
Just follow the guide.

You can send me your drive :-)

Alternatively, if you are not concerned about saving any data, you can grab one
of the bootdisks from here:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
and make a floppy boot disk for any of the MS-OS, then boot to A prompt. Use
this script which was used by IBM technical support to restore a hard drive.

A:\>debug
-f220 l1000 0 <== (notice lower case'L',followed by one,zero,zero,zero, space,
and zero), then press (enter)
-acs:100 (enter)
"1CD0:0100" mov ax,301 (enter)
" " mov bx,00 (enter)
" " mov cx,1 (enter)
" " mov dx,80 (enter)
" " int 13 (enter)
" " int 20 (enter)

Oops! There was a typo in the last post, the correct script:

A:\>debug
-f220 l1000 0 <== (notice lower case'L',followed by one,zero,zero,zero,
space, and zero), then press (enter)
-acs:100 (enter)
"1CD0:0100" mov ax,301 (enter)
" " mov bx,200 (enter) <=== Correction
" " mov cx,1
" " mov dx,80 (enter)
" " int 13 (enter)
" " int 20 (enter)
" " (enter)
-g (enter)
-q (enter)

Do not through the drive away!! At least untill you make sure it is
unusable.
First, post the brand and model of the drive here.
Second, go to the web site of the maker of the hd and get the diags.
Third, run the diags in diag mode and see if you get any error codes.
If you do, return under warantee or throw in trash.
If drive comes up with error code 00 then you are good to go.
Fifth, if the diag software can't write 00h to the whole thing (like
Seagate)
get software that can from the Internet and do this.
Then seventh, install Windows first if you want a dual boot system, it is
easier. I would start with 50%/50% with the partitions.
Eighth, then install Linux it should install on the second partition just
fine
and it should configure the dual boot routine automatically.
Then have fun.

later.....

PS. Standard disclamer, backup what you need before doing the above.

Computer parts fail, universal law. Since I don't know your
befaviors before the fact I can't tell if it was something you
did or not. Fortunately, hardware is cheap.
