Default my bi-annual rant about png files....

Hi all, about twice a year I put a post like this on the DW newsgroup, but I
suppose its really more appropriate here.

I've been hearing for years and years now that the webgraphics format of the
future is PNG. It has all the flavors of gif and jpg all rolled into one. I
know that there were issues because some 4.0 browsers didn't natiely support
png, but my question is this: how long are we going to have to wait? 5 years
is an eon when it comes to change on the internet, so why is this different?
When will it really be ok for me to make my sites with png files instead of
    jpg/gif?

Ok... not too bad this time around; I'm ususally more insensed about this...

    Comments? thoughts?

    Alex

    Microsoft is the holdout.

You can use PNG files on your Web site. You just can't expect the Alpha
transparency to work in I.E. without a hack. You can use 8 bit PNGs in
I.E. without the hack, though, as with GIFs, you can have only 1
    transparent.

When you can persuade 1) Microsoft to add full PNG support to Internet
Explorer, or 2) everyone in the world to use Mozilla instead. Good luck.
