Default My text has been converted to outlines. How do I tell what font!?

I have a document that was typed in illustrator but the text has been turned to outlines. I want to know what font was used but it doensn't list it once you have turned it to outlines.

Is there a way to tell?

Thanks

You could try

<http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/>

but once they are outlined in illustrator and the file closed, you are out of luck.

Not directly. You could send a sample to www.whatthefont.com, and their online font ID tool may help. Or, simply go through your font list and compare. As a rule, it's good to save the original font info on a hidden layer in the document to prevent this problem later on.

Or in a separate file - if you send these off to a service bureau
without the fonts, but the hidden "font layer" is still in the document
the SB will get a missing font message, and you'll get a phone call.

My rule of thumb is to keep two versions of my AI files: all my .ai
files have live text, and all my .eps files have the text converted to
paths. The .ai files are my archive master files, the .eps files are for
placement in a layout app, or when I have to send the file off to
someone else (such as a logo, etc.)

Good point, I didn't think about that because I do all my own stuff in-house.

Another way to do this, is selecting all the text and choose effects,
path, outline object, and save as eps. In the eps file the text will be
outlined, you will see this if you try to distill the eps. When
reopening the eps in AI the effects data is retained, and the text will
still be editable as text...
