    I'm baffled by this one!

(Before anyone hollers "virus," I run a scan
every night and block almost everything at
    the firewall)

I was online via dialup. Son wanted to use the phone.
So I selected disconnect from the menu bar modem status
    widget.

About ten minutes later, I wanted to get back on
and send a message. Reached for the menu bar "connect"
    thing, and it's gone!

Opened the network preferences, and the "show
modem status on menu bar" is unchecked. Checked it,
    but nothing happened.

Decided to connect via "Internet Connect"
Noticed (I had forgotten about it) that it also
had a "show modem status on menu bar" but it was
unchecked. Checked it, but nothing happened.

Then noticed that the status: instead of saying
"Idle" or "Connect to ..." was completely blank.

Clicked the Connect button anyway. Nothing happened.

Logged out, and logged into a different account.
The widget is gone from there also. Tried all of
the above again with the same results.

Fiddled with lots of other things, no change.

    Reboot. No change.

Power down, shake the iMac--maybe a loose wire :-)
    power up, no change.

OK, I decide I'll do something else, let my subconscious
work on it and do some diagnostics later. So I log out
again. Came back down after an hour to start troubleshooting,
    and it's back to normal.

Can too many minutes online make the internal modem take a nap?

    :-) :-)

Someone e-mailed me (THANKS) that it sounded
like a prefs file or two was corrupted. I agree,
except for the part about "time heals all wounds"
    even those that re-boot doesn't! :-)

However, if it happens again, I _will_ try deleting the
pertinent .plist (perhaps I should say IMpertinent).

A pessimist says the glass is half empty.

An optimist says the glass is half full.

An engineer says somebody made the glass
twice as big as it needed to be.

Too wordy. An engineer is more likely to say the glass is the wrong
    size.
