MySQL connections over network - MySQL

I am having a problem with MySQL. It has been running fine for months, but suddenly this morning connections from the webserver started timing out. Logging into the webserver and trying to connect with mysql would take 1-2min before it connected. Local connections using mysql are fine. Restarting the mysqld seems to fix the issue for a bit, but then it reoccurs. It is Ver 4.1.12-log There isn't any useful info in the log, it just says: "061012 17:04:36 mysqld ended 061012 17:04:56 mysqld started 061012 17:04:56 InnoDB: Started; log sequence number 0 1300880089" I've enabled query logging which doesn't ...

    Default MySQL connections over network

I am having a problem with MySQL. It has been running fine for months,
but suddenly this morning connections from the webserver started timing
out. Logging into the webserver and trying to connect with mysql would
    take 1-2min before it connected.

Local connections using mysql are fine.

Restarting the mysqld seems to fix the issue for a bit, but then it
    reoccurs.

    It is Ver 4.1.12-log

There isn't any useful info in the log, it just says:
    "061012 17:04:36 mysqld ended

    061012 17:04:56 mysqld started
    061012 17:04:56 InnoDB: Started; log sequence number 0 1300880089"

I've enabled query logging which doesn't show any errors either.

I don't know what more info would be useful, but can supply any info
    requested.

    This error persists across reboots.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Mark

    UPDATE
I've done some sniffing with tcpdump and the delay is definitely with
mysqld. The client sends the connection which is instantly received by
the server but then the mysqld takes far too long to reply. This is
only on one interface. The server has a private interface which is
more reliable, BUT not always ok. Just the public IP that takes this
    long.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Maybe a DNS problem. MySQL does a DNS lookup for the client IP address
in order to evaluate access permissions.

If you do not use host names (but IP addresses) in your GRANTs, you can
turn off DNS usage with skip-name-resolve in my.cnf.

Thanks for the suggestions. It may well be this.

Still odd though because I tried to confirm it was this by switching
off the nameserver it uses, and clearing the host cache with mysqladmin
and things were still connecting fine. (There aren't any /etc/hosts
    entries)

It may work fine for a few hours now, and then revert the problem.
Does anyone know if the reverse dns uses the hosts table? Ie, if I put
all the hosts that are in the grant table into here will that avoid any
slow dns lookups? I do use hostnames in the GRANT tables so using the
skip-name-resolv may not work at the moment unfortunately.
