Mysterious table problem... - Microsoft SQL / MS SQL Server

I have a table that is being heavily inserted into. It has been working fine and we had no problems with it at all for the past few months. It acelated about 16,000,000 rows in the past 5 months. All of a sudden for some reason no process could insert rows into it. The application just hangs and eventually times out. I made sure all processes were logged off and that there are no locks on any tables in the database and started up only 1 process. That 1 process could not insert a row into the table. Default Mysterious table problem...

I have a table that is being heavily inserted into. It has been working fine
and we had no problems with it at all for the past few months. It
acelated about 16,000,000 rows in the past 5 months. All of a sudden for
some reason no process could insert rows into it. The application just hangs
and eventually times out. I made sure all processes were logged off and that
there are no locks on any tables in the database and started up only 1
process. That 1 process could not insert a row into the table. Every other
table seemed fine. I could do quick access queries on other large tables but
not on this one. This table doesn't have any other indexes other than the
primary key and does not have any triggers. I renamed the table and created
a new one with it's name and everything worked fine from there. Later I
renamed the new table to something else and renamed the problematic table to
what it was and it works fine now.

    How can that be?

    Hi Kevin,

Have you checked the table with DBCC CHECKTABLE?

I have checked the table as you say, but no problems where found - does
SQL2000 automatically find & fix errors at all???

    Hi Kevin,

If I understand you correctly, you renamed the problematic table, created a
new table with that name, later renamed that table and renamed the old table
back to its original name and now everything works fine?

If everything works fine now it is likely that DBCC CHECKTABLE won't report
any errors. It is not clear to me what the original problem was, specially
because other large tables were accessible and this one wasn't.

I can only give you some general advice, and that is to run DBCC CHECKDB on
your database on a regular basis and check if you don't have any problems
with the size of your database files, including the log file and the log and
data file of tempdb. I.e. make sure that you don't tun out of disk space and
that the size of the files is big enough or that they have been set to
    autogrowth.
