Nedit 5.3 on Solaris - cannot edit a file - Sun Solaris

I'm trying to run nedit 5.3 on Solaris 8. When I run the program I get warning messages such as: translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfActivate .... found while parsing ':<Key>osfActivate:ManagerParentActivate()' String to TranslationTable conversion encountered errors translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfBeginLine .... found while parsing ':<Key>osfBeginLine:ManagerGadgetTraverseHome()' String to TranslationTable conversion encountered errors The editor does come up but I can not edit anything. It acts like it is in read only mode. The file permission on the file I am trying to edit are 777 so it seems to be a problem with nedit. ...

    Default Nedit 5.3 on Solaris - cannot edit a file

    I'm trying to run nedit 5.3 on Solaris 8. When I run the program I get
    warning messages such as:
    translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfActivate
    .... found while parsing ':<Key>osfActivate:ManagerParentActivate()'
    String to TranslationTable conversion encountered errors
    translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfBeginLine
    .... found while parsing
    ':<Key>osfBeginLine:ManagerGadgetTraverseHome()'
    String to TranslationTable conversion encountered errors

    The editor does come up but I can not edit anything. It acts like it
    is in read only mode. The file permission on the file I am trying to
    edit are 777 so it seems to be a problem with nedit. Has anyone had
    this problem and found a solution ?

    NEdit is an X client, so you need a working X environment to run it.
    What can't be found in your X environment seems to be the file
    XKeysymDB. If it is there, maybe the environment variable XKEYSYMDB
    pointing to the file is missing.

    Is there a default file used on Solaris 8. I tried the program on
    another system using Solaris 8 and it works fine. The variable
    XKEYSYMDB is not defined on either system.

    Again, there is no relation between Solaris or whatever operating
    system and X. If you have two systems with the same OS, who says
    that the X server must be the same?
    I'm not an X expert but the key names osfActivate and the like
    should be defined in the file XKeysymDB and the X error messages
    tells you that the key names have not been defined. If you can't
    figure out what is wrong, choose a group about X and pose the
    question there. This will increase the probability to get a better
    answer dramatically.
    (BTW, you can see the X server on which NEdit is currently running
    under Help>Version. This information is more interesting for the
    problem. Indeed you would get the same error messages running an X
    server on MS Windows, if the key names above are not defined).
