Need help with bevel and emboss effects! - Adobe Photoshop 7, CS, CS2 & CS3

I'm a newbie to PS and I was trying to create a graphic console to use in a VB application. The problem I am having is that I created a raised frame with a bevel and emboss effect in PS but I don't know how I did it. I know how to adjust the beveling but I can't seem to create this 'frame' again. It would be beneficial if I could send the file to someone to take a look at! Can anyone please help? Brad...

Yes, that's really close! The metal frame you created is sharp looking. I could use that :) The frame I created has a 3x5" gray inner background similar to what you have but the outside edge is blue and narrower but it has the raised appearance and the inner corners are curved like yours. It also cast a shadow effect (3D) like yours. Tell me this isn't just Bevel and Embossing because I have spend hours playing around with that function! It seems that after I created this effect, anything I put on the form had that effect. Like when I created a block on the form that had the same raised appearance of the frame - I could Select an inner portion of the block and use the MoveTool and actually take out a section from the block. Then the block with the whole in it would have the same curved in effect similar to the frame. If you can explain how you did this would be great!

Sorry to say it is just a Layer style.

    Very simple.

The frame was made with 2 rounded rectangle paths.
The brushed metal look is motion blur.
The bevel is the Bevel and Emboss layer style set to Inner Bevel with default settings.

I also added a 1 pixel stroke layer style for more contrast. You could also add a drop Shadow if you want but I didn't for the example.

The reason everything you did on that layer had the same effect was because of the layer style. If you want the exact look you got in that layer you can copy the layer style and paste it on the layer you want to apply it to.

Can you tell me how to create rounded rectangle paths? I think this is what I was having problem creating. It was the curved effect I got on the inner part of the frame that I can't duplicate. I'm totally new to Photoshop!

Just press the letter "U" on the keyboard.

You then have 3 options on type.
    - New Shape Layer
    - Work Path
    - Filled Region

Now choose the shape you want (Rounded Rectangle) to use (Rectangle is default).

Hey, thanks for the help! I think I'm figuring it out slowly. I am using PS v5.5 so I don't think some of the keyboard functions are the same as yours. What version are you using? Is it easier than 5.5?

I did find the frame options in the Actions palette. This allowed me to create the rectangle. I think the Rounded Rectangle feature is in ImageReady but I'm getting a nice bevel effect now. I'm trying to duplicate the metal effect you created but I can't seem to do it. You said you used a motion blur - did you use any brush strokes as well? Did you have to use two tones to get the streaking effect?

Use a gray background. Add noise (Filter > Noise > Add Noise set to monochromatic). THEN do the motion blur.

If I remember rightly, 5.5 didn't use vector shapes, so it will be somewhat different. I could be wrong, but I also don't think the rounded rectangle tool was until 6. I'm sure a quick google will turn up a tutorial on rounded rectangles.

    Brad,

Gradient background with monochromatic noise as gene pointed out.

Photoshop 5.5 does not have the rounded rectangle tool, but as you have found image ready 2.0 does. Photoshop 5.5 is still does just fine and I do know people that still use it, but a lot of improvements have been added since that make upgrading worth while.

    Layer sets.
    Adjustment layers.
    More layer styles (layer effects).
Edit text in place instead of through a dialog box.
The ability to modify slices in photoshop.
    Vector shapes.
    Healing brush.

Just to name a few off hand.

My guess is that you don't have windows XP since you haven't upgraded Photoshop yet. If that is the case and you want to upgrade to a newer version of Photoshop you should try to find Photoshop 7 just before CS comes out and hopefully they will give you a free upgrade to CS. That way you will have a newer version that installs on windows 9x as well as CS which is the latest and greatest so you will be ready for a new computer with XP.
