Open a PDF go to Document Preflight, it opens a window. Click list all potential problems. Then click Analyze Then you see a new window there you can click through all the problems and if you double click an item it will highlight the image or text on the PDF. We have played around with this and it works well.

I must add here that the choice of profiles is extremely important - as
much as your choice of PDF creation options.
If you do have Acrobat 6 Professional then it would be good to select
PDF/X-1a as your PDF options in Distiller and then use the PDF/X-1a
profile to check against.
