Ok, my SOHO business has outgrown my Hodge-podge grouping of old PC's that
served as my Proxy server and file stores. Between some computer savvy kids
who have their own stations and printers, my wife also has a SOHO business.
Between all of us, the following is hanging off the network.

6 Workstations (1 acts as Proxy & 1 as Filestore)
    3 Notebooks
3 PDAs that SOME-times connect wirelessly via:
2 WiFi Access Points (Large coverage area and thick walls)
    4 Ethernet Print Servers
3 Ethernet Appliances (Network MP3 Players)
1 Fax-Modem (Serial) Providing Fax services to the network

All stations are running Win2K-Pro peer-2-peer with TCP/IP and Netbios
    (needed for ICS)

We are now running with Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and share a
768K/128K DSL link. (we were running Proxy software but it kept crashing at
bad times) Web speed is fine.

I would like to replace our Pentium-3/550 ICS/Proxy workstation and
Pentium-2/500 Filestore workstation with a single "Server" class machine
with Raid-1 (Mirrored) drives. Win2K has served us well, but am THINKING
about upgrading to a "Server" class OS, but am afraid we would need too many
    "CAL's" to make it economical.

Can someone tell me what the best OVERALL solution might be...

    Hi Bob

I'd recommend Microsoft Small Business Server 2003. It's very well-priced
and you can get a great deal on it bundled with a server. It also gives you
    Microsoft Exchange for your e-mail

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/default.mspx

The base product comes with 5 CALs, so you'd need to buy more -- they come
in 5s. The link above explains user vs device licensing. You can choose
    whichever is cheapest for you.

As far as workstation OSes are concerned, Windows XP Pro or Windows 2000 Pro
are preferred. That's where it might get more costly, depending on what you
already have. Sometimes, depending on age, it's more economical to get new
machines than to buy upgrade licenses.

Some sort of backup solution is also a must. I would also get a Cable/DSL
router to share your Internet connection rather than using ICS.

Check out the SBS-related newsgroups -- there is a great SBS community.

    Hope this helps

    Oli

Why do you suggest an external router over ICS?

We are still looking at Pro vs Workstation... we don't need Exchange and the
CALs make it expensive... and XP-pro vs 2003-Server with 10 CALs is a slam
dunk if we don't want exchange...

With a router you don't need to leave one machine running. It's just a
better all-round solution. They've very cheap as well.

Even if you don't want Exchange (SBS CALs include Exchange CALs, by the
way), SBS still works out cheaper than Server 2003.

Looked at SBS briefly. It was $399 with 5 cals, and I need 10, so add
another $150. That would make SBS $550 vs. XP-Pro workstation $150. That
additional $400 would buy a tape drive or LOTS of DVD-R's

I think I will have to stick with workstation until microsoft makes it
economical for SOHOs or until I can find them on Ebay or the Surplus market.
