Export each one individually, have them translated and re-import each
one into the appropriate text frame. Your Spanish version maybe a bit
longer than your English depending on your translator.

You didn't have your printer do the Spanish version in the past did you?

I may be dumber than usual, but I fail to see the need to bring the text to Word. In any case, as Jay hints, expect the text in Spanish to be about 20% average longer, assuming a good translator.

All of the translators we've dealt with lately (meaning the past 10 years or more) deliver the translations in Word documents, with occasional exceptions when a spreadsheet is needed.

    Exactly,
You are correct Kathryn. I can't get a translator who has Indesign. How would you bring that into your native file?

Jay, I don't have a printer yet. Would thet do that?

No, unless they have translation services, but I doubt that.
Eoitehr you do the copy and pasting/exporting of text for them, or they will have to do it, in which case the translator might add an extra charge.
How wold you bring it into InDesign? the regular way: place the file and reformat the text, whcih should not take long if you have styles, and copy and paste from word, this could retain your text formatting.

There is one printer on a different forum that is doing just that. I
would not recommend this route, if they would even consider it they
would charge thousands, and you would lose control of your layout.

IF you export to rtf from indesign, it should retain your styles. IF you
can get the translator to honor those styles and save as a regular word
document, then you can re-import the word document retaining your
styles. I would modify those styles to have the Spanish dictionary and
maybe tighter tracking. These are Big IF's involved.

If I were doing your Job I wouldn't even touch layout till I had both
English and Spanish texts to layout, and I would start with the Spanish.

Good advice from Jay. But if you can't start with the Spanish, give yourself some headroom when setting up the English.

The client for whom I do foreign language materials always begins with the English version, for reasons that make good sense in their workflow. However, I find that it's very useful to have the English version to use as a template, even for languages that I can read to some extent. It's pretty easy to see what goes where when the materials are in a European language. For Japanese and Chinese, which I don't read at all, working from a clone of the English version is essential to correctly inserting the translated text, which is delivered in spreadsheets or tables, with the source English in one column and the translated text in the other.
