    two netbackup questions for you

We are trying to set up oracle backups to a netabackup staging
area(disk)local netbackup, then take it periodiclly off to tape.

    1. the netbackup software only allows whole week/month retention
policies, is it possible to set up a retention policy of 4 days

    2. when netbackup writes an rman backup to the staging area it changes
the name of the file from the rman piece name which i can control via
    BACKUP FORMAT 'bk_%d_%U_t%T' rman parameter.
can i also control the name of the file that is written to the staging
area or were does netbackup store the conversion from rman peice name
to its file name on staging area.

because i have muiltple database all backing up the staging area it is
impossible to see which file belong to which database, so i need to
figure out which files to restore if they are needed.

    cheers

Those are media sorta. You want the list of media per image.

Please quote context in UseNet responses.

Be very carefull when you change the user_retention file. NBU
puts images onto media based on retention *number* not time
to expire. If you switch a number from a year to a day, you're
suddenly putting short lived data onto long lived media. If
possible you want to change the ones you have not yet used,
but the best plan of all is to know in advance what retentions
you will need before ever starting backups so you never mix
    on a single tape.

Media is usually tapes, but it is also virtual tape. Those files
in that directory tree are virtual tapes as far as NBU is
concerned. Being an NBU newbie it's important for you to
learn that there are images that contain backup data, and
there are media that contain parts of images. A piece of
media may have several images or a single image may reside
    on several media.

Look at the man pages for all the line commands that have
either "image" or "media" in their names. Learn how to deal
with the mapping between images and media. You don't
need to be in a hurry at this point so my best help is to
teach you how to fish not to give you a fish. There is at
least one command that tells you what images are on a
volser and there is at least one command that tells you what
volsers an image resides on. Find them and will you be able
to do what you need to, but the process of finding them will
also improve all of your future NBU efforts.
