    What does 'id' report?

    You're logged in via SSH, using an improperly built `sshd`? What does
    `id -l` show? It should show "luid=0(root)".

    If I'm right about the SSH connection, what you can do is use SSH to get
    in to the system, then a loopback rlogin or telnet (`telnet 0`). The
    login you get that way will have its LUID correctly initialized and will
    let you run netconfig etc.

    Bela & JP -
    Thanks all for the reply.
    Running "id" showed that I was logged in as "luid=0(qwerty)".
    There was a hack of the passwd file by someone who placed the user qwerty
    with root access.
    I believe this was by another developer who was testing some installation
    scripts being written for an installation setup script.
    I've removed the entry from the passwd file and I can now run netconfig
    correctly.
    Thanks,
    bruce
