Netscape 6 problem / warning
Hello,
This is just a heads up for a problem that I ran into with Netscape 6.x ( a
browser that my work had to be compatible with), while using <div
style="display:none"> to hide sections of a form:
Design criteria -
The product I worked on is a web based ui for configuring some devices. The
form has over 200 fields, so to group and simplify the viewing of the fields, I
would wrap each section with <div> tags...and then hide or show each section by
changing the style="display:none" (hide) or style="display:" (show). This
works great, and also reduces the hits on the server since the entire form
loads in one shot, and is submitted in one shot. It also gives the appearance
that the user is switching pages when they tab, and retaining all of their data
between tabbing.
Problem with Netscape 6.x -
(please note that this problem does not occur in IE5.5 and above, nor in
Netscape 7.x)
When submitting the form, in NS6.x, any form element that is hidden via <div
style="display:none"> is treated as it does not exist. For example - if you
have a text field that is called "name" with a value of "foo", this element
will not be submitted if you can't see it on the page.
After researching the problem, only to find out that the NS6.x browser has
some serious bugs, we ended up writing the support for it out of our product.
