Default network w/ crossover cable & ethernet card

Hooked two computers together with a cross over cable.
One PC is XP and the other is windows98. I went through
the network set up on the xp computer and created a
network disk to use on the other computer. It shows the
network connected but can not look see the other computer
(not listed in network neighborhood or network places).
It is set up for file sharing. I am able to play unreal
tourament between the two pc's but acts a little
strange. Can not play Quake III. Sometimes it does list
the other computer but when I doulble click on it , it
says that it can not connect. Both PC's have an on board
Ethernet card and device manager says they are working
properly. On the xp machine if I double click on the
network icon at the low right of the screen it
show "connect" at 100mps. Lots of sent packets but few
or zero received. Any help would be greatly appreicated.

    Thanks,

    Don

Sounds like your cross over cable is shaky.
Try a new cross over cable or better yet,
get two new straight through cables and a powered hub
    to connect the two computers.
