New Dreamweaver Feature Request
Hi,
SUMMARY:
I would like a "Quick Links" feature to be added to Dreamweaver. This would
work as follows:
User would click ont he line number to highlight the row, then right click or
something to "Add To Quick Links", the user would be asked to supply a "Quick
Link Name" for display purposes. Then that Quick Link Name would be added to a
new window called Quick Links. The page the quick link refers to is also saved,
so if a quicklink is clicked on that page gains focus.
The user may click on a Quick Link and will be instantly transported to the
location of that link. Keeping track of the location is as easy as using your
already in place search function, and search for the contents of that line, and
arrive at the first location only. Infact this could work even further by the
user can continue to click and it will do a find next. That way this feature
can be used as a quick search, or quick links!
END SUMMARY
I believe this would be a very useful feature for developers who are working
with complex scripts that use various functions and objects.
Consistantly I run into the CLTR+F.. functon abc() or abc : function(), when
writing javascript and Private Function abc(), when writing VBScript, and so
forth. Well my solution is to add a new toolbox (or window whatever you call
it) that is a sort of "Quick Links" to sections on the page, in code. This
feature could simply save search values and just go to the first found
location. If used appropriately you will never arrive at the wrong location.
What I mean is, a user could highlight a line by clicking on its line number,
such as a function or what not, and then click "Add To Quick Links". This would
then make an entry that I could come back to this location at a single click of
a button. That way to find bugs between functions, I can easily jump between
the functions I want in an instant. This would probably save my hours of time
during debugging.
The feature could even get more in-depth to remember the page this quicklink
is for, and show all quicklinks for all pages, expandable and collapsable of
course. With a feature to expand all opened quicklink pages, or collapse all,
ect.
I work with large scripts during my work, 1000+ of lines of javascript per
page, or even more in ASP VBscript. There are hundreds of functions, and to
successfully debug I have to navigate constantly to track things down. And also
in developement when building the functions, it would be nice to quickly arrive
at a new location.
Think about the keystrokes saved! To find a function called authenticateUser()
in VB
That's CTRL[1], F[1], Private[7] Function[8] authenticateUser()[18], ENTER[1],
CLICK to UNHIGHLIGHT[1]
That's 27 keystrokes compressed to one!
In all honest goodness, if Dreamweaver had this feature (And another I wont
get into right now because it makes me CRAZY mad that Dreamweaver Dev team
failed to address it) I would be a firm support of ALL adobe products for line.
Probably =P
