I bought a new eMac yesterday for my nieces. The demo machines had the
property that if you keep the option key pressed during boot, you get
your choice of OS 9 or OS X. It's already set up for you like that.
(Amusingly enough, my salesperson didn't know about this trick, but
    his colleague did.)

For a grand, you get a combo drive (burns CD's, reads DVD's), 256 MB RAM
    (not enough, of course), a 1 GHz G3 (I _think_ it's a G3), 60 GB disk,
_and_ if you buy in the next forty-eight hours from participating dealers,
    a _free_ Canon printer. That's a deal!

If I'm correct, holding the option-key while booting only works if OS9
and OSX are installed on different partitions.
Otherwise, you have to go to your system preferences and select the
startup disk to switch between the two OSes.
Returning to OSX can also be done by holding the x-key while booting.

Actually, the eMacs have a G4 in them! I have not bought a Mac for myself
since 1993, for I have been working for several computer companies (including
an Apple) and have always managed to either get a freebie or to put together
a Mac from various bits and pieces. Last month I decided to go for a new Mac
and initially was tempted by an iBook. When I realised that the eMac has a
G4, though, it immediately seemed more logic to go for one of them...I
already have an old WallStreet PowerBook, so I don't really need a portable.

In any case, thanks for the replies, it looks like I will be able to boot off
    9, if I need to :-)

    Cheers,

    Paolo
