It's a bug in Apple's Rosetta PowerPC emulation on Intel. Apple is aware of the issue, and we hope to see it fixed soon.

There are reports that this is fixed in Mac OS X 10.4.8, just released to developers.

I just purchased a new imac-20 inch widescreen, with 2GHZ intel core duo processor. I also purchased an external 200 GB hard drive.

    Problem with PDF and Printing:
Indesign CS2 runs out of memory when I try to pdf an 8 mb document or try to print pages.

Printing from indesign cs2 is so slow that I have to create a pdf file and print the pdf from acrobat.

    Problem Page Layout:
My version of indesign cs2 keeps reverting to 8.5005005005 when I type in a 8.5 x 11 page layout.

Please advise before I return these products. I have used macs for 11 years, Heather Payne

CS2 is not supported on the new Intel Macs. That said, the performance
problems you're seeing are not the norm.

As for the 8.5xxxxxxxxxxx that's a bug in Rosetta that according to
rumors will be fixed in the upcoming 10.4.8.

I'll back out now and let the real Mac experts try to talk you through this.

Also worth noting is the fact that the extra "precision" is not actually saved in the file; it's just a display issue. Here's hoping 10.4.8 does fix it...

As to the out-of-memory condition and slow printing, I have never experienced that on my 2 GHz MacBook Pro. I do find that InDesign is a bit slower on this machine than on my 1.25 GHz G4 Powerbook, and particularly slow to come to the foreground when I have a lot of apps running. Rosetta seems to really take a lot of memory.

Have you tried printing the same document from a PPC Macintosh? Perhaps the problem is related to the document or some linked content.

Perhaps 10.4.8 will fix some of the problems - but the real problem here is that the Intel Macs were not designed to run Creative Suite.

Indesign seems to be the worst performing and most 'crash-happy' - particularly on Intel iMacs. The out of memory errors are common to most people I know who have tried usign Intel iMacs as a production machine.

Adobe themselves say not to use Intel Macs with their software - people ought to listen to them. The real culprits in this situation are the Mac salesmen who go around saying that it will all work out OK.

See if you can find a G5 somewhere - you'll get equal or better performance and far fewer crashes.

Or more accurately that the Rosetta PowerPC emulation is not quite perfect.

    heather,

I have imported a single pdf, it has 3 pages in it, and is 13mb. No problems, and printing is fast. I have not had any print problems with Indesign (latest version).

20" intel imac Early 2006, 2 Ghz ram.

There must be a problem with cs and not your mac, can you try a re-install on a new user account maybe. Are other apps affected?. Is it just that PDF files?, have you tried to optimize it in Acrobat Professional.
