New Pentax ist anyone??? - Photography

I've seen quite a bit of press for the new pentax ist camera. Is anyone using one and if so give me some feedback on it. I know it was the prototype for their istD digital SLR but im interested in the 35mm film version. Since i have a bunch of pentax lenses, im looking for a nice suitable pentax body. Thanks in advance. -- JimCracker ------------------------------------------------------------------------ JimCracker's Profile: http://forums.eyo.com.au/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=7256 View this thread: http://forums.eyo.com.au/showthread.php?threadid=28694...

Not sure how the prices are looking, but from what I've read I'd recommend a
PZ-1p (despite age) over an "*ist" (do they really mean pist? fist?)

"feature" count consider am MZ-5n or MZ-3.

I managed to have a play with one yesterday and was fairly impressed in most
areas except for the body construction. I am a 10D owner as well as a
Pentax owner (35mm film) so the comparison is probably not fair. I also
played with the 300D at Diamonds and except for the fact that I have a few
Pentax lenses I probably wouldn't go with the *Ist. I didn't have the
opportunity (nor do I think I could tell the difference) to check out an
photos taken with either the *Ist or the 300D.

yeah all of the matrix metering systems these days are whizz-bang, but NONE
can solve ALL situations...just try a spotlit performer in a black
auditorium...fuggedaboudid (unless it has some sort of scary preset
mode...but then in the time it takes to activate that i could just use spot
    metering anyway)
backlit LCDs are useful, but imho only on ones that give you more useful
info than the viewfinder - eg Dynax 7 (shows graphical DOF, relative
metering zone intensities etc). As long as you can see the shutter speed and
aperture in the VF at night, you're pretty much sweet.

The body construction of the *ist D is most likely far superior to most
DSLRs as it utilizes a concept foreign to SLR manufacture. The chassis
is made from assembled pressed steel panels rather than a cast machined
light alloy. The "feeling" that you perceive on handling the camera is
no indication of its build quality. The *ist (35mm film camera) is
    another matter.
