Hello John (Mhhh, good morning 8-))

A 'Platform i586' is a computer with at least a Pentium as CPU.
(Pentium, Pentium II,III and IV, AMD K6, AMD K7, AMD Athlon XP, AMD
    Sempron)
A '64 bits platform' is a computer with a cpu like Xeon, Pentium EMT64
    or AMD 64.

    Sorry for my poor english

    As taken from wikipedia:

A Pentium-compatible processor is a 32 bit processor computer chip which
uses an instruction set that is a superset of the version of the IA-32
instruction set as used by the original Intel Pentium processor (also
    known as the Classic Pentium)

so...this means Pentium Family up until the latest stuff which is i686...
by being Platform i586, that means that the software was designed to run
on pentium machines. software that is i686 is compiled to run more
    efficiently on newer hardware

    hope this helps!

The i586 platform is simply the Pentium classic. IOW, P75-P200MMX and AMD
K6 class machines that typically shipped with a "Socket7". Despite what
another poster has written, the i586 class machines DO NOT include the
    later PPro/P2/P3/P4 and AMD K7/K8 CPU's. Even though a i586 kernel will
run on these later CPU's there are other (better alternatives). The
important thing is to never try and run a i686 kernel on Pentium classic/K6
system - they will fail to boot.

Some distributions have i585-MMX kernels which can be used on the
P166MMX-P233MMX CPU's (and equivalent K6's) to improve performance by
leveraging the MMX command extensions. These kernels WILL NOT boot on the
    non-MMX Pentiums.

The i686 kernels cover all newer CPU's from the PentiumPro/PentiumII through
to current generation Intel/AMD architectures. However, the VERY new kit
(think 64bit) will usually benefit from further customisation with a K8 or
    _64 type "architecture" kernel.
