    Default New to Photoshop

I have just ordered Photoshop 7.0 and I'm starting from scratch! Please recommend a path that will bring me to a point that I can use this very sophisticated software reasonably well in PHOTOGRAPHY. What book(s) would you recommend that would be a good starting point. I've checked to see whether any colleges in our area offer a course in Photoshop, with no luck. Please don't tell me to "Forget it!"....I'm a retiree who's determined to learn! Thanks for your help....RP

Two good ones to start with IMHO for photography work would be the old standby:

    and:

I'm sure that others will offer up more.

When you install, be sure to do the folowing:

    a) apply the 7.0.1 [?] update from the Adobe Web site

    b) come back here when you get stuck - this is one of the best forums I have ever come across and you will learn a lot [also by reading other people's probs/solutions].

    Good luck.

I personally would suggest saving money and avoid books and classes. Every book that I have read I have been able to find more knowledgable persons on the internet to give me the same information for free. So if you have any questions especially for using PS7 for photography just let me know and I will do what I can to help you out, for FREE. I use PS 7 for a Studio currently, just let me know what your aims are and I will try and help. But maybe there is some good literature out there that is only available for cash, dunno.

You wouldn't, by any chance, be needy, cheap and lazy in the other areas of your life, would you?

Stupid suggestion, Josh. Questions are almost always more quickly answered if one has good solid reference material sitting on a nearby shelf. And as for classes—this is a great way for many folks to get up to speed.

Head over to Amazon.com and search the books for "Photoshop and Photography." You'll see a nice selection. I'd then suggest taking a trip to a large bookseller like Borders or Barnes&Noble and look through the books that pique your interest. You'll get a better idea of the writing style, and to which audience (i.e.: beginner, intermediate, expert) they're aimed toward. One can never have too many reference books, and they're easier to read in the bathroom comfort of your favorite chair.

    William,

Here's a link to a recent thread that gives tutorials, books, etc. There's some extraneous stuff to sift through,
but lots of good ideas. Check out the FAQ's etc.---tons of good info in the forum.

    Enjoy the power of photoshop.
