Re: Newbie Help
No Michael, what I meant was that since I've been a regular in the forum (a little over a year), this subject comes up time after time. It always turns into a huge thread, mostly to dispel urban legends about resolution. So I was going down the path of, the question, in general has been answered, and your telling him the resoltuion for web based work was perfectly sage.
If you resample an image from 300ppi to 72 ppi, it will be much smaller in file size, than it was. When you change ppi, with props constrained, you will change the image dimensions on the screen, but the actual page size, for print, will remain the same.
But if you take a duplicate of that image and change the dimensions only, setting it to the same height and width (in pixels) of the previous image, and you do not change the ppi, the resolution, in terms of ppi will remain the same. Thus it will still be 300ppi, and will be the same file size as the first one in which you changed the resolution only.
Both images will now have the same height and width, they will both have the same file size, but they will both have different page sizes, thus print differently.
So... my whole point was, rather than re-hash what has been hashed out before, your answer was right, as long as one is comparing apples to apples so-to-speak.
Peace,
Tony

Isn't an 8x10 at 300ppi higher resolution than an 8x10 at 72ppi?
yes it is. but you're talking inches and i'm talking pixels. 8x10" may or may not be the same as 800x600 pixels, depending on resolution. rather, to be more precice w/my #'s:
a 640x480 pixel image at 72 ppi is (according to ps) 8.889"x6.667". if you change the resolution (only! resameple off in image> image size) the image is 2.13" x 1.6". the file sizes remain the same, but the PRINTED image is smaller (not viewed on screen, it's still 640x480, only the PRINTED size changes)...
if you leave resample checked when you change the resolution from 72 to 300ppi, your 640x480 pixel image becomes 2667px x 2000 px. In THAT case the file size changes as well because you've changed the actual pixel dimention.
basically what Tony said.

Re: Newbie Help
It is. But screen resolution doesn't see 8x10, but only pixels x pixels.

Newbie Help
Hi,
I'm very new to Apache-MySQL-PHP. I'm trying to find out if there is a
program like myphpadmin that can help me make menus to query a mySQL
database and to enter data, or a good tutorial.
Basically I can make a database with myphpadmin, next I want to make a user
friendly menu to interact with it (query,enter new data). Where is a good
place to start learning how to make such a menu?
Thanks,
Rob

There is Mysql-Front which is a very good program but I don't know where
you can find it.

newbie help
Hi all,
I recently got some web space and am working on my first ASP.net page.
I am having problems and my host doesn't seem to be of any help.
I created a Access db and uploaded it to /mydomain.com. I have also
created a .aspx page uploaded to the same location.
The .aspx page contains the following code:
<%@ Page Language="vb" Debug="true" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="System.Data" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="System.Data.OleDb"%>
<html>
<head>
<script runat="server">
Public Sub Page_Load(sender as Object, e as EventArgs)
Dim conClsf As OleDbConnection
Dim cmdMbrs As OleDbCommand
Dim rdrMbrs As OleDbDataReader
conClsf = New OleDbConnection( _
"Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & _
"Data Source=" & server.mappath("MYDSN.mdb") & ";")
conClsf.Open
cmdMbrs = New OleDbCommand( _
"select state from States order by State", _
conClsf)
rdrMbrs = cmdMbrs.ExecuteReader
gridMbrs.DataSource = rdrMbrs
gridMbrs.DataBind
rdrMbrs.Close
cmdMbrs.Dispose
conClsf.Close
End Sub
</script>
<title>US States</title>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../normal.css">
</head>
<body>
<h1>State Abbreviations</h1>
<asp
ataGrid id="gridMbrs" runat="server" />
</body>
</html>
I created an ODBC connection via my host's control panel. Every time I
try to access the page via IE, I get the following message:
Server Error in '/' Application.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current
custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the
application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons).
It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server
machine.
Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be
viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within
a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the
current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its
"mode" attribute set to "Off".
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="Off"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>
Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a
custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the
application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom
error page URL.
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly"
defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>
I created a web.config file and uploaded it to /mydomain.com with my
other files but still get the same error everytime. Any suggestions
on what I missed or am doing wrong?
Thanks!
Joe

While you may be lucky enough to find a dotnet-savvy person here who can
answer your question, you can eliminate the luck factor by posting your
question to a group where those dotnet-savvy people hang out. I suggest
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.aspnet.

to start (it worked for me, anyway!).
It has to be said, the best way of explaining something is often through
an example. Programming requires a conceptual leap which is usually best
supported through having a real-world problem to solve - if you can
learn a programming language in the abstract you're in the minority.

Newbie Help
I'm having a little trouble finding things on this forum. Probably because I
don't know where to look. I am looking for some information about how I allow a
user to enter data in a list box. I have a list box that covers 99% of what the
users need to enter, but every now and then the user would need to enter
something that is not covered in the list box. As it is now, I can't figure how
to let them do that.
Also any pointers on how to use this forum. I can't seem to structure my
searches very well and I end up getting a lot of stuff that doesn't apply to
what I am looking for.
Thanks;

Re: Newbie Help
What you are looking for (by the sounds of it) is a combobox, as found in many
database front ends. HTML does not support comboboxes, hence neither does CF.
You would need to create your own combobox by scripting together a text field
and a select field (I think somebody has actually created a CF tag that does
this already) - or you could simply make 'other' as part of your select box and
have a text box available for whatever the 'other' is, thereby not requiring
any special scripting.
