Newbie! How to learn Bash shell online ? - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Hi guys, I want to install Linux on my computer, but I guess I need to learn the basics of Bash shell. Do you know of a good straight-to-the point online tutorial or other useful material to start quickly using Bash shell? Is there something else I'd need to install Linux? Thanks a lot, -- Charles....

The first chapters of http://rute.sourceforge.net are a good place to start.

IBM has a pretty good 3 part tutorial tutorial. Google: ibm bash tutorial

Get "Learning the Bash Shell" from OREILLY, second edition. No substitute
    for it.

Use the archives of, and post well-thought out questions, where you have
obviously done your homework, to comp.unix.shell.

    1) http://www.futuredesktop.org (newbie, noobie section at the top)

    2) On that page, search for "CLI" word. (CLI=Command Line). And you'll
    find some shell scripting tutorials.

    3) Installation of Linux is very easy.
    Study http://www.futuredesktop.org/#distrolist

Read: "How to create an installation CD..."
Begin with Mandrake or SuSe distro if in doubt.

If you start now, you'll pass newbie state before xmas -:)

I'd suggest you start with a distribution that runs from cd like knoppix. If
you like it, you'll probably need to repartition your hard drive to make
space (or delete whatever OS you have).
Quite frankly these days you don't need to know much bash to run linux, just
set the default runlevel to 4 and use x.
