Default Newbie Install Problems Suse 8.2

I am trying to install Suse 8.2 Pro (2 DVD's) on a newly built computer.
    Specs:
    MSI K7N2G-ILSR
    Athlon XP 2500+
    Kingston HyperX PC2700 DDRam 512megs
    Western Digital EIDE 80gig HDD
    Samsung CDRW/DVD
    Dell FP2000 LCD monitor
    PS2 Keyboard and Mouse

The installation sees to start ok, I am able to choice any of the menu
options and pick my language, Keyboard and mouse. The Yast install
recommends a swap and a full hdd partion. The Yast2 menu pops up and the
message reads "Evaluating package selection" and locks up the machine. I
have tried all the menu options and turning APIC on and off to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

also, which channels are the two drives on? IOW, are both
the HD and CD drive on the same ide channel (pri/slave)?
if so, i'd move the CD to the second channel

Both hdd and cdrw are on seperate ide channels.
    If I hit F3 "starting/instsys/sbin/inst_ setup yast"
If I hit F4 "(none) lost async page write due to i/o error on 16:00"

hmmmm. this is in "fs/buffer.c". and pertains to
async buffer writes. is this drive formatted?

    Another thing to check ..

I had a similar problem installing the same drive on an ASUS board.
SuSE was not comfortable with the jumper setting on the drive, Mine was
    jumpered master with slave.
I got around it by running the HDD as Master - which from memory is
    jumperless.

The above assumes an awful lot, and mjt is approaching your problem, without
jumping to conclusions, however I chuck this in as an observation, which
may help.... then again may hinder :-)
