[Newbie] problem installing packets - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Hi! I have bought SuSE Linux 9.0 professional with campus license. ( a german distribution.) Now I have the problem, that a few impurtant packages couldnt be installed. Default [Newbie] problem installing packets

    Hi!

I have bought SuSE Linux 9.0 professional with campus license. ( a
    german distribution.)
Now I have the problem, that a few impurtant packages couldnt be
installed. They all showed a similar error message like this:

    openoffice_org-de-1.1-43.i586.rpm failed
    rpm output
error:unpacking of archive failed on file
    /opt/OpenOffice.org/program/resource/sw64549.res;3f9acc89: cpio:MD5 sum
    mismatch

YaST showed me that these missing packages result in conflicts.

Someone told me that this MD5 error indicated a corrupt file, but as I
install from an original CD out of the shop I find that a bit weird.
What can I do about it? Do I have to get a new CD, does a new install
suffice or can I do sth other instead?

    Hope to get help.

This is certainly a corrupt file being read from the CD. Do all of these
errors occur on the same CD? If so it is probably faulty and you should
return it for a replacement. If it happens with different CDs then the
fault is probably with your CD drive. They do sometimes fail after a few
years, especially if they are in a dirty atmosphere e.g. if there is a
smoker around. You could try cleaning it but with the price of new ones
being so low it's probably not worth it.

    Hi again.

This distribution is fairly new, some 3 or 4 weeks. Bought it a week ago...
Still, it looks rather like the CD because the failure happens always at
the same time of install and no matter which of the 2 drives I use.
Funny thing is that I installed once already with no problem at all but
now had to reinstall due to a stupid mistake I made trying to configure
the partitions. And now it just wont work. :-(
