Default Newbie user looking for possible solutions to two problems

First, I want to make sure that my photos are compressed for my web page. Is that done through photoshop? If so how? I'm using 7.0

Next, I trying to get rid of borders on a transparent gif. The border is wide and soft, consuming a little part of the image. How do I trim this border without triming the image? Obviously, the erase takes off part of the image. Naturally the crop function would take some of the image.

    Use Save For Web.
    >>How do I trim this border without triming the image? <<
You would have to re-create the image where the border had obscured it.
