Default NIC Installation - Service name already in use error

I installed a Linksys NIC the other day and Windows XP
keeps giving me an error of "Service or service name
already in use" when I try to load the driver for this
    NIC.
I "disabled" the NIC and tried to uninstall - I can
disable it, but not uninstall it. I get a different error -
"Windows cannot uninstall because this device is needed
during the boot-up process" and the computer will not
    uninstall the NIC

I went to the Services screen, but could not find anything
that looked like it was related to the Linksys NIC.

I took the NIC out of the computer and re-booted the
    system.

The NIC did not show up in the "Device Manager"

Then, I re-inserted the NIC and restarted the computer.

Windows XP acknowledged that new hardware had been
    installed.
Then, it tried to load the drivers for this NIC and came
up with the same error from before "Service or service
    name already in use"

    What am I missing?

Try getting newer drivers from Linksys and installing them.
