Default No PDF produced

I am running Acrobat Distiller 5.0 in Classic mode and cannot find my PDFs. They appear to distill fine from the PS files and Distiller says files are being created and show no error messages, but the files do not appear on the desktop and a computer-wide search shows no file has been created. I have run system checks, repaired disk permissions, trashed caches, rebooted, and nothing works. Anybody have the answer to this one? I'm on deadline! Thanks!

I'm running in Tiger (Mac OS 10.4) on a Powerbook G4 1.5G Ram, using Distiller in classic mode

Do you have Acrobat 5.0.5 installed under OSX? Try right-click (or Opt-click) on the Acrobat icon and choose Show Package Contents. Rummage around in there as that may be where they are being placed.

Thanks Larry. I am running Acrobat 5.0. I assume you mean that the PDF files are being saved somewhere in the Acrobat or Distiller folder? Nope, not there, and a further search of the hard drive reveals no file of that name, although Distiller (which runs in Classic) seems to be creating and saving a file to my source destination.

How is the Acrobat 5 installed? As an OSX Application? If it is, did you follow the instructions? OSX applications are different from OS9. The executables are hidden and only an alias is used. This is the icon you see in the OSX folder. Another thing might be extended characters in the path to your source destination (like an accent or something).

Did you do a clean install of 10.4 (recommended), or did you do an upgrade install?

I did an upgrade install, and so far I haven't had any of the problems that other Tiger users are experiencing. Until now. I guess the next thing for me to try is a reinstall of Acrobat. I doubt upgrading to Acrobat 7 would make a difference.

Why would you say that? Distiller 5 is running in Classic. Distiller 7 is native OS X.

Anyway, Distiller 5 is running fine on my 10.4 machine, but I did a clean install. Removing and reinstalling Acrobat is probably your next best step.

ACROBAT DISTILLER PROBLEM: Same as yours... I have an iMac. I Installed [recently] Tiger OSX. Now my Acrobat Distiller , which I run under 9.22OS, will not make pdf files. Something has changed.

I've read your posts. Have you had any luck?

Thanks JOHN

I'm still working on the problem, John. It's a vexing one, too. I tried reinstalling Acrobat with no luck. If push comes to shove -- and if nobody can answer me here at Adobe -- I may try an different distiller app which a computer guru friend suggested to me called PStill. You can find it at www.stone.com. I will let you know if I find a solution, because I HAVE to find a solution to this one.

Tiger, clearly. Have you reported this to Apple? They might fix it,
but they aren't doing much to encourage the use of Classic.

Rhonda — Thanks for your quick response. This was quite a surprise problem... I usually export out of Freehand to a Quark .eps file, run it through OS9 distiller [5.0] — Never any problems until Tiger — I'm thinking of upgrading... or HAVING to if I can't get this resolved quickly.

Will upgrading fix it, you think?

Andy, I didn't see your reply until a second ago. No I haven't reported it to Apple. I didn't think upgrading to Tiger would affect the 9.2.2 OS, or its programs, or how they run.

My PDF files, out of the applications, are currently about 10X larger than they need to be, but I can use them... drats!

I am going to try installing a new PPD and see if that does the trick. If not, I think I'm either going to have to pop for an upgrade or check out PStill (an entirely different piece of software for distilling.) I do think the problem is related to installing Tiger, and this is the only problem I've had with that cat. So far.

Backatcha, John. I didn't get anywhere on the Adobe site when I researched this yesterday, and no dice with the updated driver, either. I think I will just give PStill a shot. I'll check back here and let you know how that goes, but probably won't be until this evening or tomorrow.

It seems odd that you would go with another Distiller product. IMHO - noone makes a better PDF than Adobe. Why not upgrade to 7.0? There is so much more this app offers than 5.

It is surprising, but Classic does depend on the services of Mac OS X,
so they can change the way Mac OS 9 programs behave. I guess.
