Default No sound on new install

I've got a Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit card, which Ubuntu doesn't seem to
recognize. I can play media files just fine, but nothing comes out.
There hasn't been *any* sound with this OS.

I just installed it a few minutes ago, and I am a Linux newbie, so much
    would go over my head.

Thanks for any help or insights,
    Ian

Ah, sorry for the false alarm. I just had to turn up the volume on some
sort of master volume slider. :-)

Yes, welcome to Big-U. Quite amazing, really, how much and how well
    Ubuntu self-configures.

Yes, I noticed that. It didn't even hiccup with my DSL line, and seeing
as I already had Fedora installed on this partition, it took out Fedora
and the boot loader with no problem. Who do I thank for this OS? :-)

Don't forget the other favourite: twiddling the sliders and reconfiguring
ALSA before discovering the headphones plugged into the amplifier....
