    Default Non-breaking spaces???

    Hi -

I'm creating a justified text area in a graphic, but I want to be able to control the line breaks so that the company name doesn't split.

I've tried inserting a non-breaking space using Shift+Space, but it still breaks.

I've tried putting in a soft return using Shift-Enter to force the line to break before the name, but then the justification breaks down.

    Suggestions please!

    Brandon,

The magic tool to control the line breaks is you: Illy is just trying to help, and it is usually wise to listen to what she tells you.

If you should manage to justify text as it is, it will probably become ugly; you sometimes see completely unjustifiable justification, even in print. I would suggest your working with the text by adding or shortening (and maybe adjusting the area); actually that will often results in improvements.

It is a little strange that Illustrator CS doesn't come close to the text features of InDesign, even though we were told the "text engine" is nearly identical. (You can press Ctrl+Shift+x in InDesign to insert a nonbreaking space.)

Even more peculiar is the fact that Illy's help file in CS actually mentions "nonbreaking spaces" but never tells you how to create them!!! On this help screen, it mentions how you can view nonbreaking spaces if you turn on "show hidden characters":

    Brandon --

Have you tried the No Break option on the Character palette's fly-out menu?

Select the two word separated by the space you want to make non-breaking and choose No Break.

    Stu:

Thanks! I completely forgot that was there. And yes, it works for me so I'm sure it will work for Brandon.

Obviously Illustrator's online help needs help! If you do a search for "nonbreaking space", the exact same term that InDesign uses, it never tells you how to do it.
