Not enough memory to open file - Adobe Illustrator Windows

I receive files from a client which I believe are saved in illustrator V7. If I try to open them in Illustrator v11 or 12 I get the error message "Not Enough Memory to open the file". If I go back to an older machine which has Illustrator v9 the file opens fine. The older machine has less memory and a slower processor. Default Not enough memory to open file

I have search through the forum for a way to get the files to open in V11 or V12 Illustrator. It is way to time consuming to be jumping around from machine to machine to make this work. Is there a known issue that the CS versions of Illustrator cannot open or has trouble opening other files?

Gary, you may try opening it by double clicking.

    Gary,

Sometimes the "not enough memory" message is displayed when the actual situation is that some function which is supposed to create a new object of some kind returns a null object, yet does not return any error code at all (nor throw any exception.) So the routine which calls that function makes the assumption that it must have not had enough memory to allocate the object, whereas actually it failed for some other unknown reason and just didn't report why.

If the files were originally saved with any version of Illustrator older than AI 9, you should be able to open them in a text editor and see what version they were saved by.

The first two lines of an AI 7 file look like this:
    %!PS-Adobe-3.0
    %%Creator: Adobe Illustrator(TM) 7.0

The first three lines of an AI 8 file look like this:
    %!PS-Adobe-3.0
    %%Creator: Adobe Illustrator(R) 8.0
    %%AI8_CreatorVersion: 8

If you cannot open the files in AI CS by using the Open command, try using the Place command and unchecking the Link box to embed them. You may need to set the Show File Types to All to get them to be available.

If that doesn't work, you could try opening them in AI 9, then doing a Save As and making sure that the compatibility is AI 9 instead of AI 7 or 8.

In general, though, Illustrator CS (and CS2) can open older Illustrator files. I have files saved by AI 3 that it has no problem opening.
