Ubuntu seems to show up a lot on websites lately. They must be doing
something right.

Is it available on CD or do you have to download it? I'm stuck on a
56k modem for now.

Both, you can download it from their website or you can order it on CD. They
even don't charge you for P&P. you receive the CD's completely free. Their
website is www.ubuntu.com You'll have to register before you can order the
CD's but that too is free.

You can get it mailed for free, see the shipit (iirc) link on the Ubuntu
website. I received 5 copies of 5.10 in the mail on Saturday. Each pack
contains a live CD and an install CD. I had to wait about 3 weeks, mind.

The Ubuntu site is actually www.ubuntulinux.org.
To get free CDs you'll need to log on to this site:

I think a lot more people head over to http://www.ubuntuforums.org/
imho. This newsgroup has very few entries. The Ubuntu forums website is
quite active.

I use Ubuntu... it's a great debian based distro. The forums, wiki, and
IRC are great sources of support.

I'm kind of old fashioned, I prefer a Usenet group over web based
forums :-) I'm glad this group was created. I hope more users find
their way here.

Enter the following in your news reader:

gmane.linux.ubuntu.user

Don't forget that Ubuntu is based on Debian, and thus both the regular
Linux groups (comp.os.linux.*) and the Debian groups would be helpful.

Just because it's on your news server doesn't mean it's on all.

[compton ~]$ grep ubuntu .newsrc
alt.os.linux.ubuntu
[compton ~]$ wc -l .newsrc
105101
[compton ~]$

That's giganews.

That's because gmane is a news server on it's own - like
news.individual.net. So you won't /get/ anything with gmane in it on
news.individual.net! :-)

I suspect it's to new

Can't speak for news.individual.net, but at giganews:

[compton ~]$ grep -c gmane .newsrc
85
[compton ~]$ grep -c gmane.linux .newsrc
20
[compton ~]$

Most commercial news servers like to advertise that they have more groups
than anyone else, and collect newsgroups from all over. Doesn't mean that
anyone reads them - but if you want the newsgroup for gerbils using Linux
on an iMac - it's probably out there, and a hundred different servers
carry it. Actually, looking at the titles of the gmane.linux.* groups,
they look as if they started life as mirrors of a number of mailing lists.

Well, there doesn't seem to be much point of adding another news server
either if I already have news.individual.net. I wonder why I was pointed
to gmane in the first place, seems silly :-)
