Default NTFS permissions on existing external hard drive

    Greetings,

I installed ubuntu over the weekend and when I plugged in my external
hard drive, ubuntu found and mounted it very quickly. I can access files
just fine however I cannot drag / write files onto the external hard drive
and received an error - "You do not have permissions to write to this
folder." How do I fix this so that I am able to write to the external hard
drive? The windows machine that I used to access this drive before is now
running only ubuntu. Thanks in advance.

If it is only an NTFS partition on the hard drive you cannot write files
or copy files to the hard drive. You would have to have a seperate FAT
partition on the drive. Then you could copy files to it and read them with
    Windows also.

The reason being that Mickey does weird and wonderful things in
their NTFS systems, and refuses to publish the details. Thus there
are drivers for Linux that can write, but in general they are not
to be trusted because nobody knows what criteria to apply. Those
drivers are based on guesses, and one always expects Mickey to do
something underhanded to lock people into their systems. Meanwhile
reading such file systems can be safe.
