    Default Numbering Chapters

I am trying to make a report in InDesign. I would like to be able to number the chapters and sub-chapters. Example:

    1. chapter Family
    1.1 chapter Mom
    1.2 chapter Dad
    1.3 chapter Sister
    2. chapter Computer
    2.1 chapter Screen
    2.2 chapter Keyboard
    etc.

Of course I want InDesign to auto-number the chapters but I can't find it anywhere. Could you help me?

You'll have to do that manually or script it.

    Default Re: Numbering Chapters

InDesign (like QuarkXPress and PageMaker--it's closest equivalents) doesn't yet have autonumbering. You'd need to look to long document applications like FrameMaker.

(There are many word processing features not in page layout applications, and even more layout features not in word processing apps!)

But you can name a section (in the pages palette), and insert the section name (I think it's Type->Insert Special Character->Section marker).

I think this works. I don't have ID at home :(.
