Odd question: PLESE HELP!

Hey all,
I need some help, please:

Ok..how do i describe what I am trying to do.

I have a black and white illistration---charcoal drawn.

(not my work...but i am colorizing it as a gift to my father, whos wanted it in color for some time now)

Part of the image is a torch with fire...its blown back because the holder of the flame is in motion.

I can use the magic wand tool to copy it.

I have an image of fire that i would like to use to fill in the space left by the magic wand, and then paste it back into the image.

I hope all of you are still with me.

I can get the outline of the flame onto the image of fire, but i cannot seem to simply replace the outline of the flame with an actual flame of the same shape, filling in the void.

I have tried everything I know how to do, including just cutting and clipping around the flame, and adjusting the opacity levels.

none of my ideas have worked--

In short: get an image to fit and fill an outline of another image exactly.

does anyone know how to help me?

Hi Jonah,

You can definitely do that....you are just not quite finding the proper command. What you need to use is "Paste Into".

The approach you'll take is to select and copy the source image for the paste (the fire). Then in the destination image, select the area you want the fire placed and then perform Edit > Paste Into (Shift+Ctrl+V), and that will paste the contents of your previously copied data into the selected region, masking out anything the falls outside the selection boundary. You can then move the pasted area as you like to better position it within the selected area.

After performing this task, look at your layers palette and you'll see what has happened. The Paste Into action pasted your copied data as a new layer, but with a layer mask applied that only allows the data to be visible within the area you outlined with your selection.

Oh yeah...one other thing to keep in mind is that you're better off using source and destination images of the same resolution so that you don't have to worry about scaling of your pasted data when placing it into the destination image.

This is what Id do. Go to this url...

and create a small flame big enough and scaled correctly to cover the approximate area of the missing flame. It wont match the missing flame but youll fix that. Then use liquify to modify the flame to match your needs such and wind blow back, size etc.
