old Director .exe files won't play, asking for ShockwavePlayer

I have an old CD-ROM I am trying to use, on it there a several Director
..exe's. Every time I try to run one I get an error message that says....

"This application requires Shockwave player which is not installed. Click Ok
to download player from Macromedia's website."

I have downloaded the player and restarted. It is installed, I checked it on
the test page, but still the same error. I am running Windows XP Professional.
The Director .exe's are from 2000. I think that the last time they worked was
about a month ago when I tested this CD.

Please help.. I need to send this to someone today.
