one obstacle to xcode install on 10.3 - Mac Programming

I encountered several obstacles while attempting to install xcode on 10.3. here is one of them which may be useful for other programmers banging their heads against the same wall. I managed to download the 21 segments of the xcode cd from apple. That went smoothly enough. They had names like "Xcode_Tools_1.1.002.dmgpart.bin" and I tried opening them with Stuffit Expander. They refused to open. I tried selecting all of them at once and dragging them to Stuffit. No dice. I tried downloading a new version of Stuffit. No dice. Default one obstacle to xcode install on 10.3

I encountered several obstacles while attempting to install xcode on
    10.3.

here is one of them which may be useful for other programmers banging
their heads against the same wall.

I managed to download the 21 segments of the xcode cd from apple.
    That went smoothly enough.
They had names like "Xcode_Tools_1.1.002.dmgpart.bin" and I tried
opening them with Stuffit Expander. They refused to open.

I tried selecting all of them at once and dragging them to Stuffit.
    No dice.

I tried downloading a new version of Stuffit. No dice.

Finally I went into the Stuffit preferences and found a little
checkbox called "Expand encoded files" under the "expanding" tab. I
checked it. Then they all started making disk-drive noises, but they
all ended up in separate folders and I had to manually put them into
the same folder to work with them. (The whole experience made me feel
dirty. Solaris and Linux gave me a lot of grief, but they never made
me go into a GUI and click a checkbox. They made me sweat at the
command line, with man pages, and somehow it felt cleaner and more
    wizardly.)

So when I had a folder of 20 or 21 dmgparts I double-clicked one of
them and some kind of magic happened. Suddenly a new volume mounted
and offered me a tempting yellow box called "Developer.mpkg." I
double-clicked it and it started installing.

I hope this story and its operational hint about the checkbox will
    save someone else some grief.

That's a nice story, but the truth is that StuffIt is irrelevant and
your mistake was to involve it in the first place. You should have
simply opened Disk Utility and pointed it at one of the parts. Disk
Utility will read a .dmgpart.bin file and do the join automatically. m.

Um, no surprise there. Normally with Disk Images on Mac OS X you just
double-click them, and Disk Utility launches, and mounts the disk image
for you. This works even on segmented disk images. You could have just
done the entire process in a single step.
