only export part of an image - Adobe Illustrator Windows

we are importing svg and exporting to export to gif. however when we import the svg it is tiny and placed at the top left of the artboard. question: when i go to export it, illustrator is trying to export the whole worksheet. is there a way to just "save for web" the selected objects? or just save the artwork? (i know i can use slices but i want to automate the process and i dont think this can be done with slices)...

    Adam:

There may be something else in the field, try Ctrl + A to highlight all. In any case you can make a stroked unfilled rectangle exactly where you want the boundaries to be, select it and Object> Crop Area> Make. steve

Dean, because it is easier to place it.

Jacob, i know. I was interested in Stephen's friendly response to Adam's question, not only did he give Adam the answer, but also advises him along the way. How nice some are, :-)

This is a realy pain, in illustrator 10, when you save for web, it just saves the content, while it seems that in CS2 it is trying to save the whole worksheet area.

Adam, so this means that when you Ctrl+A you just get the artwork as expected?

Steve, what happens if you try to te?

Is there a new setting in CS2 acting as a tripwire if you do not know it?

I haven't tried all the settings, but save for web works just like usual. SVGs I made myself are also OK, nothing unexpected. I would like to know how the problem SVG was made and what is in it. steve
